Grenada With Grandparents
After saying goodbye to our crossing crew, we were excited to welcome Jessica’s parents, Jean and Lenny, to Grenada. It was almost a year since we saw them last, right as we moved onto Big Em, so there was much of boat life to catch up on! Grenada is a busy island, with lots of restaurants and resorts, and we enjoyed Grammy and Grandaddy’s resort pool and beach club. Rosie can’t get enough karaoke so we had some evening performances on the bow of the boat, and we spent days playing in the sand.
We learned about the history of cacao on the island and the process of making it into chocolate, tasting the cacao fruits right off the tree. Cacao has an edible sweet citrusy slimey goo that coats the beans, the beans are ground and turned into cocoa powder. Grenada is known as the ‘Spice Island’ due to it’s prominence in growing and exporting nutmeg, cinnamon, bay leaves, cloves, ginger and vanilla.
Jess, Gus and Jordan did a jungle hike to a waterfall with a guide, Elvis. We knew it was going to be an adventure when we showed up in sneakers and Elvis wore wellies. We crossed streams, thrashed through the jungle, saw some cool plants, tasted more cacao fruit, and the boys swam in the waterfall. It was one of our first drone shots which turned out great and we didn’t crash the drone!
We celebrated Grammy’s birthday, welcomed Hannah back to the boat, and stocked up on groceries and spices before heading to the much smaller islands of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. This is where our Caribbean adventure begins!
